Why use merino wool instead of acrylic yarn?

As winter is drawing in and it is getting colder, I’ve been thinking about the different types of yarn I can use to make jumpers, scarves, hats, socks etc… to keep warm.  Obviously I want to stay away from anything synthetic and plastic - so no acrylic. Which leads me to wool blends…

This past week I was set to make a baby beanie and socks and chose merino wool. I must admit that at the time it was mainly because of its colour, but once it arrived I immediately noticed its softness. This started me wondering about merino wool in particular, and why it is a great fibre to use for babies..

In my research I found some really interesting facts;

  1. Breathability: Merino wool is highly breathable, which helps to regulate body temperature by allowing moisture to escape, while acrylic can trap heat and moisture.
  2. Moisture-wicking: I had never heard this term before! Wicking means that sweat is moved away from your skin to the garment’s outer surface and the garment then dries quickly. So you keep dry and comfortable. Acrylic, however, can retain moisture, which can lead to you feeling quite uncomfortable...
  3. Warmth: Merino wool provides excellent insulation without being bulky, keeping you warm in cold weather. Acrylic can offer warmth too, but it doesn’t have the same thermal properties.
  4. Softness: Merino wool is soft and comfortable against the skin, while acrylic can sometimes feel scratchy or less pleasant, especially if it’s lower quality.
  5. Odour resistance: Merino wool has natural anti-microbial properties that help resist odours, making it great for active wear. Acrylic tends to retain odours more easily and they are really hard to wash out!
  6. Sustainability: Merino wool is a renewable resource, whereas acrylic is a synthetic material derived from petroleum, which raises environmental concerns.
  7. Durability: High-quality merino wool can be quite durable and resistant to pilling, while acrylic may wear out or pill more easily over time.

Overall, while acrylic yarn is cheaper, merino wool is SO much better! It offers superior performance and comfort, warmth and durability, and it is really lovely to work with.

I am really glad I chose the merino wool, the soft yarn was easy on my hands and the beanie and socks worked up to be soft and cosy! I also learnt something new, which is always great!

Both the hat and the socks are available to purchase from my etsy store;
